Theme
The theme for World Cancer Day 2025 is, “Close the Care Gap,”. What does it do? It continues to highlight imbalances in cancer care and its treatment worldwide. It urges the beneficiaries to tackle these disparities. It should be done by enhancing healthcare access, funding research, and making it sure that every patient receives quality treatment, regardless of the socio-economic background.
This article digs into the causes, types, prevention, latest treatments, and worldwide efforts in the fight against cancer.
The Importance of World Cancer Day
Why World Cancer Day holds such Significance?
World Cancer Day is very good step taken by the UICC, as discussed earlier. Yet we can understand its importance by seeing these points mentioned below. It
- creates understanding about the increasing burden of cancer.
- encourages early detection of the disease to provide better treatments.
- diminishes the stigma associated with the disease, giving patients confidence and strength.
- promotes policy changes for better healthcare facilities.
- Raises funds for research and treatment programs.
Impact of World Cancer Day
More than 100 countries of the world participate in World Cancer Day campaigns. Major landmarks globally, light up in blue and orange to mark this occasion. Special appreciation to Hospitals, NGOs, and health organizations. They conduct free screenings and awareness drives. Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, leading to tumors or abnormal blood cells as in leukemia. These cells can spread and interfere with normal bodily functions. What happens next, it makes early detection critical.
Global Cancer Statistics
It’s really painful to know that in year 2022, over 19 million new cancer cases were reported worldwide. More pain along with fair comes, when the thing came out that by 2040 cancer cases are projected to reach 28 million annually. 10 million people died from cancer in 2022 alone. 70% of cancer deaths have occurred in the countries having low and middle income due to limited access to healthcare.
Cancer in India: A Growing Concern
India has been a growing worry regarding this fatal disease. In India 1.5 million new cancer cases are diagnosed every year. Specially, tobacco-related cancers, like oral, lung, throat are the most prevalent. Breast cancer is the leading cancer among Indian women. There is a limited awareness in the country and also lack of screening facilities, which in result contribute to late-stage diagnoses. Late-stages, may everyone remain safe from it, Ameen, has mostly and unfortunately no cure.
Types of Cancer and Their Prevalence
Most Common Cancers Worldwide
Let’s further discuss about the types of this deathly disease, which are more common
- Lung Cancer: It is the leading cause of cancer deaths. It is mostly caused by smoking and pollution.
