Internationally, Mufasa: The Lion King dominated as the stronger performer(Winner), as highlighted by Box Office Mojo. With 65.4% of its earnings coming from overseas markets, Mufasa outshone Sonic 3’s $211.55 million global total. This strong international performance displays Disney’s sustained dominance in global animation markets.
Deadline reports that both films gained from the holiday release schedule, attracting family audiences and facing minimal contest. The holiday box office for December 20–26 totaled $263 million, though it declined 6% compared to last year.
Sonic 3 led the regional weekend box office, while Mufasa: The Lion King excelled globally due to strong international performance. As noted by Deadline and Box Office Mojo, family films played a key role in uplifting the holiday box office, with both titles contributing notably to the $263 million total.
Sonic 3 wins second box office weekend against Mufasa
According to deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 by a whisker topped the domestic box office over the weekend with a total of $38 million in three days, slightly surpassing Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, which earned $37 million. However, when evaluating in the extended five-day window, Mufasa outclassed Sonic with $63.7 million compared to it’s $59.9 million.
As reported by Box Office Mojo, Sonic 3 has reached $137.55 million domestically in its second week of release, thriving from its appeal to families and franchise fans. In comparison, Mufasa achieved $111.4 million domestically during the same period, Musing strong international support, which contributed to its $327.98 million worldwide total.

Star Cast of Mufasa: The Lion King
The film stars Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, with Blue Ivy Carter making her voice acting debut as Kiara. The score was composed by Dave Metzger, while Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote original songs for the soundtrack.
When Will Mufasa Be Streaming?
Since the film got its debut on 20th December 2024, people looking forward to see it on their television sets. Unsurprisingly Disney has not yet announced any VOD or streaming date for Mufasa. But, as per the previous Disney releases fans can expect it to be released in the mid to late March or early April. Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 arrived in theaters on June 14 before being made available on VOD on Aug 8 and Disney+ on Sep 25. That scars 55 days before the VOD release and a 103-day window before the Disney+ streaming date.

The Lion King was an observant and commercial smash when it was released back in 1994, and it spawned two direct sequels, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1 1/2. Both were released direct-to-video. The 2019 remake, also titled The Lion King, easily broke the $1B mark at the box office. Every entry in the franchise is streaming on Disney+.
